OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES & HIGH ADVENTURE

Our Troops place an emphasis on outdoor activities. We plan at least one weekend outdoor activity a month (except for December). Most months, those activities include at least one overnight campout. Our Scouts have the opportunity to attend summer camp at Wente Scout Reservation. This is a week-long trip and a lot of fun and opportunity to earn merit badges. During the summer, we also have a weeklong high adventure trip. Many of those recent treks involved backpacking in or around Yosemite and the high Sierras. We have also planned treks to the BSA's high adventure sites, including Northern Tier in 2019, Sea Base in 2020 and Philmont in 2022. We expect several of our Scouts to participate in the 2023 World or National Jamboree.

We draw our Scouts from the northern part of San Mateo County, including but not limited to San Bruno, Millbrae, South San Francisco and Pacifica.

OUR PARTNER TROOPS

On February 1, 2019, the first day such a unit could be formed, we founded Girls Troop 4172. Our Boys Troop (Troop 72) and our Girls Troop (Troop 4172) work together closely, participating in all activities we have to offer I accordance with BSA youth protection guidelines.

TROOP MEETINGS

We hold our weekly meetings on Thursday evenings beginning at 7:00 p.m. We currently meet at John Muir School during the school year and San Bruno City Park during the summer. Parents are welcome to attend Troop meetings but are not required to be there. Regular attendance is expected, but we do understand that school and family come first and there are times your scout can’t make a meeting. During these 90-minute meetings we practice Scouting skills, work on advancement and merit badges and plan and prepare for upcoming events. We meet year-round, going dark only for Thanksgiving, the Christmas holidays and when the Troop is out of town on a weeklong camping trip.

THE SCOUTING PROGRAM

We are very proud of the Scouts from Troop 72 and 4172 that have gone on to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Eagle Scout is one of the most rewarding achievements that a you can earn that they will carry with them through their life. We have over 20 Scouts earn this prestigious rank in the last half-dozen years.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Our Troop is active in supporting our community, undertaking one or more service projects almost every month. Our Scouts have completed many Eagle projects in and around San Bruno. We participate annually in Operation Clean Sweep and Scouting for Food. One of our most rewarding activities is placing American flags at the Golden Gate National Cemetery for Memorial Day.

UNIFORMS

Scouts are in uniform at all Troop events and activities. Depending on the activity, Scouts are expected to wear either their full formal Class “A” uniform or a Class “B” uniform consisting of a troop t-shirt and troop hat. The class “B” uniform is worn at the majority of troop meetings. The troop provides all Scouts with their first hat, t-shirt and handbook. The Scouts provide the remainder of their uniform, which can be purchased at the Foster City Scout shop.

CAMPING EQUIPMENT

Scouts generally provide their own personal camping gear. The Troop provides the heavy-duty group equipment on outings. For the Scout’s first few trips, the most significant equipment they will need to provide is a backpack, a sleeping bag and good walking shoes.

COSTS AND FEES

We charge annual dues to cover annual BSA registration fees and fees charged by the Council. Scouts are expected to pay for summer camp, certain Troop activities not directly related to camping, trips to the BSA national high adventure camp and Council run activities such as merit badge midways. We are dependent on the success of our annual fundraising drive that takes place in early July to cover our remaining expenses.
